Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1142

This specimen was lot 1115 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €340 (about US$448 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"TOURNAI, Seigneurie, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR demi-patagon, 1648. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare Petit éclat du flan. Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 89, 9 septembre 2006, 316. (lordship of Tournai, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half patagon of 1648. Obverse: Burgundian crosss under a crown, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, small edge bump, Very Fine.)"

Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The patagons were struck at the Brussels mint and at Antwerp, s'Hertogenbosch and Maastricht. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders. Altho the half and quarter patagons are much scarcer than the patagons, they bring less at auction. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. This type was struck 1626, 1630-36, 1645-48, 1652-65. The SCWC does not award this a high catalog value but does not price it above Very Fine.
