Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 569

This specimen was lot 569 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AR halve patagon, 1633, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond stokkenkruis met een vuurijzer tussen het jaartal en het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver half patagon of 1633, Bruges mint. Obverse: Crowned Burgundian cross surcharged with the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very fine.)"

This half patagon was struck 1622-23, 1631-35, 1641, 1646-49, 1652-65. 1633 and 1648 are the common dates. Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Brabant and Tournai. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date for the type.

Specification: 14.05 g, 0.875 fine silver; this specimen is 13,83 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 330-6; Haeck 797; Delm-305, KM 33.
