This specimen was lot 1172 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €170 (about US$215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1648, Bruxelles. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Quelques taches. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-55, silver patagon of 1648, Brussels mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, supporting the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Some stains, very fine.)"

This type was struck at Antwerp and Brussels (shown here) 1622-65. They are some of the most poorly made crowns of the seventeenth century. Double and triple patagons exist but are very rare.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen is 28,18 g.
