Brabant 1649(h) patagon Dav-4462
This specimen was lot 1293 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €130 (about US$180 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR patagon, 1649, Anvers. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Flan large. Légère faiblesse de frappe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver patagon of 1649, Antwerp mint. Obverse: Burgundian cross under a crown, supporting the jewel of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, order chain around. Large planchet, weakly struck, Very Fine.)"
One patagon was 48 sols, stuivers or patards. It was roughly equal to a leeuvendaalder but had about 18% more silver. Patagons are notoriously badly struck. This type was struck at Antwerp 1622-28, 1631-39, 1645-58, 1661-65.
