Sincona sale 94, lot 1536

This specimen was lot 1536 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 6,000 CHF (about US$8,316 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Brabant, Herzogtum, Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. Doppelter Dukaton 1649, Anvers. Äusserst selten. Fast vorzüglich. Feine Patina. Überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (duchy of rabant, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, double ducaton of 1649, Antwerp mint. Extremely rare, About Extremely Fine, Nicely toned, Extraordinarily well struck.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The double ducaton shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1636-62 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1636-73. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors altho the doubles, being struck for presentation, are usually well made.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 64.96 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 64.71 g.
