(duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, double ducaton of 1652, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: crowned bust right with flat collar; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions. Polished long ago, now retoned, nice portrait, very fine or better.)"
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The double ducaton shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1636-62 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1636-73. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 64.96 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 63.27 g.
