Künker Auction 441, lot 4944

This specimen was lot 4944 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,402 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN, BRABANT Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. Doppelter Patagon 1652, Brüssel. Sehr schön. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, double patagon of 1652, Brussels mint. Very fine.)"

Single patagons were struck in substantial quantities for Philip IV 1621-65 at Antwerp (hand mintmark) and Brussels (angel face mintmark). The SCWC makes no mention of a double patagon and they must be rare, as this is the second we have posted on this site. This piece, being struck for presentation, is much better made than most patagons.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 56.2 g, 0.875 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, this specimen 56,03 g.

Catalog reference: KM 53.3 (single patagon), Delm. 295 a; Dav-4461; Vanhoudt 645 BS P2 (R3).
