Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 3011 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €460 (about US$594 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. Souverain d'or (Lion d'or) 1652, Brüssel. GOLD. Seltener Jahrgang. Leichte Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II of Spain, 1555-98, souverain d'or of 1652, Brussels mint. Rare date, lightly cleaned, very fine.)"

This type is noted for Antwerp (Fr-107, hand mintmark) and Brussels (shown here) for 1648-63. The Brussels mint mark was an angel's face. Similar souverains d'or are recorded from Tournai and Flanders.

Recorded mintage: 9,000.

Specification: 5.54 g, 0.919 fine gold, 30 mm diameter; this specimen 5.50 g.
