Jean Elsen sale 156, lot 932

This specimen was lot 932 in Jean Elsen sale 156 (Brussels, September 2023), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,796 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV souverain (lion d'or), 1651, Bruxelles. D/ Lion couronné deb. à g., brandissant une épée, la patte posée sur un globe placé sur un socle. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Fines griffes au droit. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold souverain or lion d'or of 1651, Brussels mint. Obverse: crowned lion left, brandishing a sword, his other paw on a globe; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Rare, fine scratches on the obverse, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Antwerp and Brussels 1648-65. Similar lions d'or were struck in Flanders (Fr-227) and Tournai (Fr-397). It is scarcer than the double souverain but brings less at auction.

Recorded mintage: 37,000.

Specification: 5.54 g, 0.919 fine gold, 30 mm diameter, this specimen is 5,39 g.
