Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 812 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €200 (about US$320 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1651, Bruxelles. Deuxième type. Droit: B. drapé et cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Belle patine. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV (1621-65), silver ducaton of 1651, Brussels mint, second type. Obverse: draped and armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, Golden Fleece below. Nice toning, very fine.)"

The regular type, issued 1636-65 from Antwerp and Brussels (shown here, with angel face mintmark), is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this type, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
