Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 31787 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brabant. Philip IV of Spain gold 2 Souverain d'or 1647 AU55 NGC, Antwerp mint, Flat collar variety. A fantastic example of this large gold type, mostly centered and with an extremely strong obverse. The fields are bright, without any notable issues and overall the piece retains much of its original luster. Truly a remarkable offering and exceptionally scarce at this grade level." This type is listed for Flanders, Tournai and Artois but is nowhere common. In 1637, the bust was revised to show a much smaller ruffed collar. The hand mintmark denotes this as a Antwerp issue.

Recorded mintage: 138,000 for 1645-47.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-105 (listed under Belgium), KM 74.1.
