"BELGIEN Flandern, Grafschaft Philipp IV. 1621-1665. 2 Souverain d'or 1642, Brügge. Geharnischtes, gekröntes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes, von der Vliesordenskette umgebenes Wappen. Kl. Kr. Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Belgium, county of Flanders, Philip IV, 1621-65, double souverain d'or of 1642, Bruges mint. Obverse: armored, crowned bust to right. In the seventeenth century, Flanders was part of the Spanish Netherlands. Once the economic engine of northern Europe, Spanish misrule and repeated invasions impoverished the province in the 1600's. This type, issued 1638-47, is accompanied by single souverains d'or (KM 32) and a couronne d'or (Fr-228).

Recorded mintage: 42,000 for 1642-45.

Specification: 11.08 g, .947 fine gold, .337 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 11,10 g.

Catalog reference: Delm-559, Fr-226, KM 51.
