The first specimen was lot 990 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €2000 (about US$3,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AV dubbele souverein, 1647, Brugge. 2e type. Droit : Gekroond bb. radié met smalle kraag. Revers: Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeldzaam. Ex HSA 57.2142. bijna Prachtig. (county of Flanders, Philip IV (1621-40), gold double souverain of 1647, Bruges mint, second type. Obverse: crowned bust to right with small ruffed collar; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Scarce, about extremely fine.)

The second specimen was lot 3004 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,561 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"BELGIEN, FLANDERN, Philipp IV. von Spanien, 1621-1665. 2 Souverain d'or 1647, Brügge. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 55. GOLD. Attraktives Exemplar, fast vorzüglich. (duchy of Flanders, Philip IV of Spain, 1621-65, double souverain d'or of 1647, Bruges mint, in NGC AU-55 holder. Attractive example, about extremely fine.)"

This type is listed for Brabant, Tournai and Artois but is nowhere common. In 1637, the bust was revised to show a much smaller ruffed collar.

Recorded mintage: 41,000 for 1646-47.

Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold; the first specimen is 11.10 g.
