Aureo y Calicó sale 424, lot 158

This specimen was lot 158 in Aureo y Calicó sale 424 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 4,800 € (about US$6,215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Netherlands. 1672. Charles II. Brussels. Double patagon. Taps. Attractive. Very rare. Silver. EBC- [about extremely fine]." Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. This is the first double patagon of Charles II we have posted. The SCWC notes the Flemish patagons as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 56.2 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen 56,66 g, Ø44 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM unlisted, Vanhoudt 698.BS P2, Vti. 411, Dav-4490.
