Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1040
JE164-1040r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1040 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €400 (about US$557 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR ducaton, 1672, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. enfantin à d. R/ Écu couronné, tenu par deux lions, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Nettoyé. Éraflure sur la tranche. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducaton, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: young bust right; reverse: two lions support the crowned arms of the king, decorated with the Golden Fleece. Cleaned, scuff on the edge, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck at Antwerp 1666-73 and 1676 and at Brussels 1666-80, with more from the Bruges mint in Flanders. Altho not as wretchedly made as the patagons, the series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. Eventually, in 1686, the mint switched to milled coinage, but the Spanish Low Countries were too wracked by war and economic depression to benefit.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 31,86 g.
