Flanders 1670 ducaton Dav-4479
This specimen was lot 903 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Karel II (1665-1700), AR dukaton, 1670, Brugge. Eerste type. Droit : Bb. radié als kind. Revers : Gekroond wapenschild gesteund door twee leeuwen. Onderaan het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Barstjes. Mooie patina. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig." (County of Flanders, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducagon of 1670, Bruges mint. Obverse: ruffed bust of the child king; reverse: Crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewels of the Order of the Golden Fleece below. Nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Bruges mint 1666-73 and 1676. A very similar coin was struck for Brabant. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as more common than the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
