Brabant 1671(h) ducaton Dav-4475
This specimen was lot 1039 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €700 (about US$975 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Charles II (1665-1700), AR ducaton, 1671, Anvers. Premier type. D/ B. enfantin à d. R/ Écu couronné, tenu par deux lions, orné du bijou de la Toison d'or. Bien frappé sur flan large. Rare dans cette qualité. Provient de notre vente 128, 12 mars 2016, 781. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Charles II, 1665-1700, silver ducaton, Antwerp mint, first type. Obverse: young bust right; reverse: two lions support the crowned arms of the king, decorated with the Golden Fleece. Well struck on a large planchet, rare in tis quality, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck at Antwerp 1666-73 and 1676 and at Brussels 1666-80, with more from the Bruges mint in Flanders. Altho not as wretchedly made as the patagons, the series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. Eventually, in 1686, the mint switched to milled coinage, but the Spanish Low Countries were too wracked by war and economic depression to benefit.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 32,47 g.
