Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 946

This specimen was lot 946 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,642 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1662, Anvers. Deuxième type. Piéfort de poids double. D/ B. cuirassé à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Très rare Nettoyé. Petits coups au droit. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1662, Antwerp mint, second type, piefort of double weight. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece below. Very rare, cleaned, small rim nicks, very fine.)"

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The double ducaton shown here was struck at the Antwerp mint 1636-62 (hand mintmark, shown here) and at the Maastricht mint 1636-73. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 64.96 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen 64,93 g.
