Jean Elsen sale 108, lot 830
Brabant 1658 ducaton rev JElsen 108-830.jpg

This specimen was lot 830 in Jean Elsen sale 108 (Brussels, March 2011) where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1658, Bruxelles. Deuxième type. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, soutenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Nettoyé. Beau à Très Beau " (Duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1658, Brussels mint, second type. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms supported by lions, the Golden Fleece below. Cleaned, fine to very fine.)

Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type was struck 1636-65 at Brussels (shown here, with angel head mintmark) and Antwerp and should be commoner than it is. The SCWC notes similar coins were issued in Flanders and Tournai. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 32.31 grams.
