Brabant 1659(h) ducaton Dav-4454
This specimen was lot 1167 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €160 (about US$203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR ducaton, 1659, Anvers. Deuxième type. D/ B. dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu couronné, tenu par deux lions. En dessous, le bijou de la Toison d'or. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-55, silver ducaton of 1659, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: Draped and armored bust right; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Fine to very fine.)"
Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1636-65. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4457) and Tournai (Dav-4459). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. Double ducatons were struck in 1659.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, this specimen is 32,27 g.
