Brabant 1659(a) ducaton Dav-4454
This specimen was lot 74685 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPANISH NETHERLANDS. Brabant. Ducaton (3 Gulden), 1659. Brussels Mint. Philip IV. NGC AU-53. A well-preserved crown with dusty gray toning and a light glow of underlying brilliance. The details are slightly soft in places but delightfully free from excessive wear. A strong wholesome example. From the David Sterling Collection." Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck at the Antwerp and Brussels mints 1636-65. A very similar coin was struck for Flanders (Dav-4457) and Tournai (Dav-4459). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors. Double ducatons were struck in 1659.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 32.48 g, 0.944 fine silver, .985 troy oz ASW.
