Brabant 1658(h) souverain d'or Fr-107
This specimen was lot 977 in Jean Elsen sale 135 (Brussels, December 2017), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,355 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV souverain (lion d'or), 1658, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., couronné, brandissant une épée, la patte posée sur un globe placé sur un socle. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Superbe/Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold souverain of 1658, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant to left, brandishing a sword and supporting a globe; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Rare, extremely fine to very fine.)"
This type is listed for Antwerp (shown here) and Brussels (angel face mintmark, Fr-108) for 1648-65. Similar lions d'or were struck in Flanders and Tournai.
