Brabant 1661(h) ducaton Dav-4454
This specimen was lot 291 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €70 (about US$99 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT - Ducaton 1661, Silver, PHILIPPE IV 1621-1665 Anvers. 2me type. Buste du roi avec mince collet a droite, en haut main entre le millesime .PHIL. IIII. D. G. HISP. ET. INDIAR. REX. R/. ecu couronne et supporte par deux lions .ARCHID. AVST. DV - X. BVRG. BRAB. Z- C. Naar verluid afkomstig uit het wrak van VOC-schip de 'Liefde. Corrosion. Presque Beau - Vrijwel fraai. (duchy of Brabant, ducaton of 1661, Philip IV, 1621-65, Antwerp mint, second type. Obverse: bust right of the king in a flat collar, the mintmark divides the date; reverse: crowned arms supported by two lions. Reportedly from the wreck of the VOC ship Liefde. Corroded, nearly fine.)"
The regular type, issued 1636-65 along with half ducatons and double ducatons from Antwerp (shown here, with hand mintmark) and Brussels, is scarce but not rare. The other provinces issued this denomination, including Artois, Flanders, Tournai and Luxembourg.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
