Brabant 1661(a) souverain d'or Fr-108
This specimen was lot 624 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,040 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AV souverain (lion d'or), 1661, Bruxelles. D/ Lion deb. à g., couronné, brandissant une épée, la patte posée sur un globe placé sur un socle. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Rare. Fines griffes. Légère double frappe. Très Beau. (duchy of Brabant, Philip IV, 1621-65, gold lion of 1661, Brussels mint. Obverse: crowned lion rampant left, brandishing a sword, the other paw posed on a globe; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Slightly double struck, Very Fine.)"
This type is listed for Antwerp (hand mintmark, Fr-107) and Brussels (shown here) for 1648-65. Similar lions d'or were struck in Flanders and Tournai.
