from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 114

This type was struck 1822-38 at Popayán and Bogotá. This type is one of the commonest gold coins of South America but the recent rise in the price of gold has made this coin expensive. This specimen was lot 114 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayan, Colombia, 8 escudos, 1835UR, encapsulated NGC AU 55. Lustrous, more boldly struck than most but with light wear on high points, trace of toning."

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
