Sincona sale 85, lot 2169

This specimen was lot 2169 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$162 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA, 3 Yuan 1991, Shanghai Mint. Panda. KM 351. Fr-B11. FDC, In Originalverschweissung, Uncirculated, In original capsule."

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. This NCLT was the first issue of this denomination and the first one gram gold panda, an experiment that was not put into regular production. The other three yuan in the SCWC are silver, mostly quarter ounce (KM 1740, 1742, 1744, 1746, 1748, etc.) but a few half ounce (KM 402, 403, 473, 734, 824, 1035).
