Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74609
SB1123-74609r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74609 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Castile & Leon. Blanca, ND (1379-90). Uncertain Mint. PCGS AU-58. Obverse: + AGNVS DEI QVI TOLIS, Lamb of God with flag, annulet at left; Reverse: + PE CATA : MVNDI MISE, crowned monogram. Sharply struck and well-centered, the finer details of the lamb quite apparent." Juan I was king of Castile and Leon 1379-90. He died at the age of 32 after falling from his horse. He issued reales, half reales and cornados in silver and blancas and half blancas in billon. The blanca was a new denomination and we are uncertain of its face value, which was probably low. This example lacks a mintmark but the coin is recorded from Burgos, Cordoba, Cuenca, Leon, Segovia, Seville, Toledo and Zamora.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon.

Catalog reference: Cayón-1478.
