Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 108

This specimen was lot 108 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 420 € (about US$529 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Juan I (1379-1390). Seville. Half real. Obv.: IOhN crowned. +DOMINVS:MIChI:ADIVTO. Rev.: Castle, dots in the angles, S below. +IOhANIS:REX:CASTELL. Encapsulated. Nice. Scarce. EBC [extremely fine]. Ex Elariz Collection." Juan I was king of Castile and Leon 1379-90. He died at the age of 32 after falling from his horse. His attempt to conquer Portugal in 1383-85 was an ignominious failure. He issued reales, half reales and cornados in silver and blancas and half blancas in billon. This type is also known from Burgos.
