Castile (1379-90)-L cornado
This specimen was lot 49367 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Kingdom of Castille & Leon. Cornado, ND (1379-90)-L. Leon Mint. Juan I. NGC MS-62. The mint is misattributed to Segovia on the NGC insert, but is actually Leon Mint. No other examples of this mint on the NGC population report. From the Kyle Ponterio Collection." Juan I was king of Castile and Leon 1379-90. He died at the age of 32 after falling from his horse. His attempt to conquer Portugal in 1383-85 was an ignominious failure. He issued reales, half reales and cornados in silver and blancas and half blancas in billon. Cayón lists this coin from Burgos, Cordoba, Cuenca, Seville, Segovia, Toledo and Zamora (Cayón-1447 thru -1456) but not Leon.
