Künker sale 354, lot 5560

This specimen was part of lot 5560 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €220 (about US$306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, 1780-1806. 8 Gute Groschen 1796..., beide Münzstätte Braunschweig. ...2 Stück., Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Erworben 1982 von G. Blancon, Hannover. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 24, Osnabrück 1993, Nr. 1837. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles William Ferdinand, 1780-1806, eight good groschen of 1796, Brunswick mint. [One of] two pieces, extremely fine.)"

This denomination was introduced in 1756, soon after the founding of the convention thaler of 1753 (28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver). It was was struck in various styles until 1805, with this final type noted for 1786-1805. Eight gute groschen = one quarter thaler. Sixteen gute groschen were also minted, starting in 1780.
