Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1796-MC thaler Dav-2173
This specimen was lot 5559 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €350 (about US$487 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, 1780-1806. Konv.-Taler (Speciestaler) 1796, Braunschweig. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, fast Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Waldemar Wruck 16, Berlin 1965, Nr. 1307. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles William Ferdinand, 1780-1806, convention thaler of 1796, Brunswick mint. Choice example, fine patina, about uncirculated.)"
This type of 1787-96 is probably the most available thaler from this locale for the eighteenth century. It was also struck in 1801 but that date is rare.
