Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41320

This specimen was lot 41320 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1782-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. PCGS AU-50. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1781-84 and is fairly common. It was originally worth one third of a thaler but had slipped to one quarter thaler by the 1780's.
