Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1658 ducat Fr-638
This specimen was lot 3645 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €825 (about US$1,066 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Dukat 1658, Goslar. GOLD. Gewellt, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, August the Younger, 1635-66, ducat of 1658, Goslar mint. Very fine, bent.)"
Altho Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel was a prolific issuer of silver coins up to enormous ten thaler pieces, her gold issues are scanty and expensive. This one year type is perhaps the most available of all the gold ducats of the seventeenth century from this locale.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 3.41 g.
