Künker sale 354, lot 5605

This specimen was lot 5605 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,100 (about US$5,706 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Löser zu 2 Reichstalern 1657, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Mit Wertpunze. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, double thaler of 1657, Clausthal mint, for the Harz mines, with denomination punched in. Attractive example with fine toning, minor scratches, extremely fine.)"

This year saw the issue of a series of multiple thalers, including a quintuple thaler (Dav-LSA160), quadruple thaler (Dav-LS160), triple thaler (Dav-LS161), double thaler (Dav-LS162, shown here) and 1½ thaler (Dav-LS166). The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover.
