Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1657-LW thaler Dav-6521
This specimen was lot 75030 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg & Luneburg (Celle). Taler, 1657-LW. Clausthal Mint. Christian Ludwig. PCGS EF-40. Despite some limited handling, this attractive specimen offers handsome details and soft gray appeal throughout." Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714. This type is listed under Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, not -Calenberg, and is recorded for 1649-65, the entire reign of duke Christian Ludwig.
