Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1657-HS thaler Dav-6518
This specimen was lot 5137 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €360 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG-CELLE, FÜRSTENTUM, Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Reichstaler 1657, Zellerfeld. Seltener Jahrgang. Kl. Randfehler, kl. Schrötlingsriß, fast vorzüglich. (duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, thaler of 1657, Zellerfeld mint. Rare date, minor edge defects, small planchet crack, about extremely fine. Davenport shows the wrong picture for the reverse.)"
This "wild man" thaler is listed for 1654-55, 1658-62 and 1665. However, despite the many years of production, it is on the expensive side. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.40 g.
