Celle in 1648. It lies on the Aller northeast of Hannover

This specimen was lot 814 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$3,714 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND -Celle Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Löser zu 2 Taler 1659, Clausthal. Ausbeute. Mit Wertpunze. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, two thaler of 1659, Clausthal mint. Countermarked with value, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type depicting the leaping stallion is recorded for 1657-64 in numerous varieties and the single thaler is among the common types of the period. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714.
