Künker sale 354, lot 5372

This specimen was lot 5372 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,100 (about US$2,923 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG, STADT, Breiter 1 1/2facher Reichstaler 1659, mit Titel Leopolds I. Mit Wertpunze. R Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Brunswick, broad 1½ thaler of 1659, struck in the name of Leopold I, with denomination punched in. Rare, handsome patina, minor planchet flaws, extremely fine.)"

The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. The city of Brunswick produced coinage separate from the ducal issues in the 16th and 17th centuries. This type was accompanied by a 1¼ thaler (Dav-LS265) and 2¼ thaler (Dav-LS263).
