Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle 1662-LW 2 thaler Dav-LS174
This specimen was lot 32201 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. Christian Ludwig 2 Taler 1662-LW AU58 NGC. "2" stamped to the left of the date. A rare and imposing piece. With wholly natural surfaces and very faint luster, this piece has superb eye appeal. While Brunswick double talers aren't necessarily rare as far as multiple talers go, they are a highly collectible series and this is one of the finest examples of the type that we have seen. The town scene on the obverse is quite elaborately engraved, with just a hint of wear here and there preventing it from achieving Mint State stature. Overall a charming piece with much better eye appeal than the singular grade assigned to it by NGC would suggest." This type depicting the leaping stallion is recorded for 1657-64 in numerous varieties and the single thaler is among the common types of the period. A similar three thaler (Dav-LS181) was issued in 1664; it is also rare. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714.
