This specimen was lot 34690 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle. Christian Ludwig 1-1/2 Taler 1661-LW XF40 NGC, Clausthal mint. Lippold Wefer as mintmaster. With value stamp "1 1/2" on reverse. A visually intriguing issue struck in celebration of the lodes and production at the Harz mines, where a significant amount of silver for circulating coinage originated. Wholly enveloped in a smooth, pewter patination across evenly and moderately worn devices. Ex. Doug Robins Collection." The mines in Brunswick-Lüneburg inspired the dukes to issue many thalers and multiple thalers to honor them, a major source of his revenue. This one is scarce and has the denomination punched in on the reverse. Christian Ludwig was duke in Calenberg 1641-48 and in Celle 1648-65. His younger brother Georg Wilhelm was duke in Calenberg 1648-65 and in Celle 1665-1705. The last brother, Ernst August, was duke in Calenberg 1679-98 and elector of Hannover 1692-98. Ernst August's son George inherited Calenberg and Hannover in 1698, Celle in 1705 and the throne of Great Britain in 1714.
