Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1658-HS thaler Dav-6343
This specimen was lot 73225 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1658. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: crossed keys and HS. August "the Younger". PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. The noted environmental damage is observed in the form of some darkening on the coat-of-arms side. Regardless, very little handling is seen, with a pleasing tone adding to its flair. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1655-65 and is fairly common. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel is famous for its long series of wild man thalers.
