Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1638-HS ducat Fr-637
This specimen was lot 5198 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$11,830 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Dukat 1638, Goslar oder Zellerfeld. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Spitzenkragen//Gekröntes und verziertes, 11feldiges Wappen. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Min. gewellt, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Münzen und Medaillen AG 73, Basel 1988, Nr. 549. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, ducat of 1638, Goslar or Zellerfeld mints. Obverse: mantled and armored bust right with lace collar; reverse: crowned eleven-fold arms. Extremely rare, choice example, slightly wavy, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
Altho Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel was a prolific issuer of silver coins up to enormous ten thaler pieces, her gold issues are scanty and expensive.
