Brunswick 1640 ducat Fr-534
This specimen was lot 1012 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $3,981.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Braunschweig (Free & Hanseatic City). nomine Ferdinand III. Holy Roman Emperor, 1637-1657. AV Dukat. Dated 1640. Coat-of-arms / Legend in five lines within ornate frame. Jesse, Scratches, slightly wavy flan. AU." Altho the city of Brunswick was the capital of the duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, it considered itself independent, much to the annoyance of the duke, who was forced to move to Wolfenbüttel. This type was struck 1638-49 but all dates are rare.
