Brunswick 1641 ducat Fr-534
This specimen was lot 1168 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Braunschweig, Stadt, Dukat 1641. Von grösster Seltenheit. Gutes sehr schön. Gewellt. (Germany, city of Brunswick, ducat of 1641. Of the highest rarity, Good very fine, Wavy planchet.)"
This type was issued 1638-60, succeeding a goldgulden of 1622-36 (Fr-533). The city opposed subjection to the rule of the Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel dukes, a conflict which broke out into open warfare on several occasions. The dukes finally besieged, captured and sacked the city, ending its independence.
Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 3.46 g.
