Künker sale 354, lot 5445

This specimen was lot 5445 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,644 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1639, Zellerfeld. RR Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 21, Osnabrück 1992, Nr. 2856. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1639, Zellerfeld mint. Very rare, superb patina, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1638-39. The obverse legend states, "AUGUSTUS HERZOG ZU BRAUNS UND LUNE·". The succeeding Dav-6347 has the obverse legend ending "BRAUNS UND LU" and the date and mintmaster's initials have moved on the reverse.
