Künker sale 263, lot 785

This specimen was lot 785 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €15,000 (about US$19,377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG-CELLE, FÜRSTENTUM Friedrich, 1636-1648. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1647, Clausthal, auf das bevorstehende Ende des 30jährigen Krieges. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Mit Wertpunze; Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel, umher 14 gekrönte Wappenschilde//Hügel mit Bergwerksstollen und verdorrten, bzw. abgeschlagenen Bäumen in Landschaft, oben strahlende Sonne, l. Bauernhaus mit arbeitenden Menschen und Tieren im Vordergrund, r. brennendes Haus. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives, fast vorzügliches Exemplar. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, Frederick, 1636-48, triple thaler of 1647, Clausthal mint. On the end of the Thirty Years War, from the Harz mines, with denomination punched in. Obverse: armored bust to right, fourteen shields around. Reverse: hill with mine shafts and withered and severed trees in countryside, shining sun above. To left, farm house with people and animals, right; burning house. Of the greatest rarity, attractive, choice extremely fine.)"

The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. The Brunswick dukes seem to have become enamored of multiple thalers and issued more different types than any other locale.
