Künker sale 354, lot 5583

This specimen was lot 5583 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,113 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Christian, Bischof von Minden, 1611-1633. 1/2 Reichstaler 1624, Osterode oder Catlenburg. RR Etwas Belag, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion LHS Numismatik 100, Zürich 2007, Nr. 828. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian, bishop of Minden, 1611-33, half thaler of 1624, Osterode or Catlenburg mint. Very rare, some pitting, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, formed in 1520, fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover. The duke was also bishop of Minden and a passionate defender of the Lutheran cause. He was killed in a battle of the Thirty Years War. This type was struck in several varieties (KM 7, 67, 73 and 74) 1617-29.
