Sincona sale 22, lot 1254
Sincona sale 39, lot 3078, the same specimen?

The first specimen was lot 1254 in Sincona sale 22 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$314 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Celle, Herzogtum, Christian, Bischof von Minden, 1611-1633 Taler 1624. Clausthal. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, Christian as bishop of Minden (1611-33), thaler of 1624, Clausthal mint, good very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 3078 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 450 CHF (about US$540 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Celle, Herzogtum, Christian, Bischof von Minden, 1611-1633 Taler 1624. Clausthal 28.79 g. Welter 924. Dav-6458. Vorzüglich. Etwas Belag. (bishopric of Minden, Christian I, 1611-33, thaler of 1624, Extremely fine. Irregular patina.)"

The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This type was struck 1617-25 in nineteen varieties (Dav-6430 thru 6467) but is generally common.
