Künker sale 293, lot 587

This specimen was lot 587 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €280 (about US$377 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Julius Ernst, 1598-1636. Reichstaler 1625, Scharnebeck. RR Prägeschwäche, Kratzer, fast sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 154, Osnabrück 2009, Nr. 402. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, Julius Ernest, 1598-1636, thaler of 1625, Scharnebeck mint. Rare, weakly struck, cracks, about very fine.)"

This rather rare thaler of 1624-25 was issued by a shortlived splinter of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle called Brunswick-Dannenberg. On the death of Julius Ernst, his heir, August II, united the realm with Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
