This specimen was lot 40343 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. Taler, 1624-H-S. Christian. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. This lovely and nicely preserved example exhibits bold devices with lustrous surfaces that retain much brilliance displaying rich gray patina through. A vey difficult type to locate in the high state of preservation sure to see spirited bidding from many advanced collectors." The duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle, formed in 1520, fell extinct in 1705 and passed to Hannover. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This type was struck 1617-25 in nineteen varieties (Dav-6430 thru 6467) but is generally common. This subtype, struck 1622-24, is fairly common.
